A Tranquil Retreat in Koh Chang

Once I had arrived Koh Chang from Bangkok by minibus and ferry, I had received rented motorbike and checked-in at the hotel. This trip, I stayed at Annika Koh Chang Hotel. This hotel is in center of the island with nice atmosphere and affordable price. Even it is not on the beach, but the hotel has free shuttle service to the private beach of another hotel in the same company.

After I checked-in and kept my belonging at the hotel, it was about 2PM, I did not waste any minute by starting to explore the island. The first place was Klong Phlu Waterfall, which is only 3 km away from my hotel.

Klong Plu Waterfall

It is the biggest waterfall in Koh Chang. It is located on the west coast of the island. This waterfall is the one of the most popular attraction point and must-visit for the adventure & nature lover. From the entrance, the visitor must walk through the trekking way for 600 meters to reach the waterfall. The waterfall has 30 meters height and it has a natural pool where the visitor can swim and enjoy. Klong Plu Waterfall is open daily, 8AM – 4.30PM. The admission fee for adult foreigner is 200 THB (6 USD) and kid is 100 THB (3 USD). 🏝️

I spent about an hour at Long Phlu Waterfall, about 3.30PM, I did riding to another landmark of Koh Chang where is located in the southernmost of the island, Bang Bao Pier and Village.

Bang Bao Pier and Village

It is the traditional village of the fishermen which is 15 km away from Klong Phlu Waterfall, 30 minutes by motorbike. On the way, it has some part with steep and curvy road which the rider must be careful and ride consciously. For this area, it has many food and souvenir vendors by local people. For example : dried fish, shrimp paste, local dessert, local snack, decoration goods, etc. The visitors can see these vendors by walking on long footpath what is connecting the village to the pier. The most interesting point at this are in the lighthouse which is located at the end of the walkway. It is outstanding lighthouse what is gracefully standing for the visitor to snap the cool photo. 📸

I could feel like I travel back in time to when I was 10 years old kid and visited the sea for the first time. At that time, I could see the local seafood products and smell the “salty” of the sea water. Even the time has been passed more than 25 years, but the feeling when I visiting Bang Bao Pier and Village has recalled me the childhood memory. 🧒

About 4.30PM, I waived the goodbye to the charming fishermen village and moved to another place to see the sunset, Kai Bae Viewpoint.

Kai Bae Viewpoint

This view point is located on the way from Bang Bao Pier and Village to my hotel. Here, I could see the view of the Kai Bae Bay and it is one of the best point to see the sunset in Koh Chang as it is located on the hill in the west coast of the island. Furthermore, other than sunset, the interesting point is the panoramic view of the gulf of Thailand from this view point what the visitor cannot miss it.

After sunset, I had headed back to the hotel and had dinner around that area at local food stall. I felt I want to take some rest earlier than usual as I woke up since 4AM to catch the minibus and ferry to here and rode the motorbike to explore the island during the afternoon time. Anyway, on that date, I had very nice feeling has I was escape from the working life to relax from stressful atmosphere. I could feel that my chaos brain had been unplugged and reseted. It was a night what I could sleep tight and get refreshed. 😴

The next day after, I woke up since 7AM to take a shower and keep my belonging. It was sad to feel that it was the last day I stay in Koh Chang. It was a pity as I had only 2 days here. If I have next chance, I will stay here for longer time for sure. However, I still had the time until 12PM to catch the ferry and minibus back to Bangkok.

I had the breakfast and checked out from the hotel about 9AM. Then, I had hopped on my motorbike to sooth the beach atmosphere. Because, I have visited the island, If I don’t visit the beach, it seems my trip is not fulfilled. 😄 Koh Chang has many beaches what the visitors can desire upon their convenient. As I had limited time, I had selected to visit White Sand Beach which is located on the way back from my hotel to the ferry pier.

White Sand beach

The beach is located almost in the heart of west coast of Koh Chang. To get this beach, it has public beach access. Even it was on Saturday morning, but the beach was in peaceful atmosphere. It had only few people there. I could hear the sound of the waves, slowly waves, bounce to the beach. The sand was very fine and white as its name. It was the good relaxing time to sooth the fresh air what can recharge my energy. it made me think that the life may not require a lot of things. Just peaceful time in my mind is sufficient to log me out from turbulence world. 😌

I spent the time at the White sand beach until 10.30AM. Then, as I had only lite breakfast at the hotel, I decided to have the local seafood Tom Yam Noodle at a food shop on the way back to the pier. I order a bowl of noodle and told the vendor that “not spicy”. it was tasty noodle what you have to try once you visit Koh Chang.

Seafood Tom Yam Noodle – Yummy 😋

.

It was about 11.30AM at that time. I had planned to catch the ferry at 12.45PM. Before I headed to the pier, it still had one landmark what I had to visit, Koh Chang Shrine.

Koh Chang Shrine

It is known as one of the oldest and most respected spiritual centers of the island (Thai name : ศาลเจ้าพ่อเกาะช้าง). it is located on the top of the hill near to the ferry pier. The architecture of the shrine was built in Chinese style. It has the myth that in the past, when the fishermen saw the sea has turbulence wave what make them cannot go off-shore, they would pray respect to this shrine. Then, the sea would suddenly become smooth. Nowadays, this shrine is one of the famous place for the visitor to pray respect to have the safe journey.

Then, about 12.15PM, I did contact to the motorbike shop to return my rented vehicle at the pier on 12.30PM. After that, I bought the ticket and boarded the ferry on 12.45PM to back to the main land and took the local taxi to the bus stop to catch the minibus to Bangkok. I booked the minibus ticket at 3.15PM and the bus arrived Bangkok – Ekkamai Bus terminal in 8.30PM.

I could say that it was only my short trip with 2 days 1 night in Koh Chang. Even I could feel that it still was not enough as it has many things left to explore, but it was my pleasant trip to get relax and recharge my energy to fight with the real life. Definitely, if I have the next change, I will comeback to this island again to sweep what I left. because I owe you….Koh Chang. 😆
